Revolutions per minute, or RPM, is the most common measurement of engine speed. After we correct the problems, the PCM will adjust the engine idle speed to the correct setting. Should the speed of the engine idle need adjustment, we do it by diagnosing and correcting the things that cause it to be incorrect. Though no external engine idle speed adjustments are possible, many things can and do cause problems. The power control module or PCM provides all adjustments to the idle speed. We cannot directly adjust the engine idle speed on a modern vehicle. An engine’s idle speed is a programmed function. Vehicles built today have no such provision. On carbureted vehicles, we increase and decrease the engine idle speed by simply turning an adjustment. How do we adjust the engine idle speed to correct the problem? The answer is a bit more complex than most folks realize. A likely cause is a failure of the engine to idle. We lift our foot from the accelerator and the engine stops running. ![]()
